Tim Funnell Trio

The Tim Funnell trio is a vehicle for the cutting edge of improvised music. Tim Funnell manages to combine a deep knowledge of the Jazz Tradition with a thorough engagement with the modern world. This results in music which is both dynamic and accessible but also nuanced and contemplative. You can expect well loved jazz ditties, ripping classics and modern compositions with surprising twists.

Tim Funnell

From 2012-2016 he studied on an exciting “New York comes to Groningen” program in the Netherlands where he was able to study with some of the best Dutch musicians and visiting New York Teachers. He has a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz piano from The Prins Claus Conservatorium, Groningen but also a philosophy degree from Sheffield University. He also spent a semester in Paris (as part of the Erasmus program) where he had lessons from some of the top musicians from the French scene.

He has performed with many fantastic musicians such as Alex Merritt, Ashley John Long, Riaan Vosloo, Sisanda Myataza, Al Swainger, Robert Brian, Kevin Figes, James Vine, Paolo Adamo, Pasquale Votino, Greg Sterland, Olly Blanchflower, John Gibbon, Nick Costley White, Sam Crockatt, Alina Engibaryan, Patrice Blanchard, Alexander Skoric, and Andrea Caruso.

The ensemble is completed with Paolo Adamo on drums and Riaan Vosloo on Bass.

Paolo Adamo

Bristol-based drummer Paolo Adamo has carved out a distinct reputation in the contemporary scene for his intuitive musicality and conversational approach. Known for his ability to listen and react in the moment, Paolo’s playing is defined by a rare sensitivity to melody and dynamic interplay. Originally from Molise, Italy, his journey began at age four, eventually leading him to study at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Academy and the Jazz Puzzle seminars in Belgium. 

Since relocating to Bristol at 19, Paolo has become a vital collaborator for a diverse range of acclaimed artists, including AndySheppard, ChadLefkowitz-Brown, JakeMcMurchie, and JohnLaw. His playing sits at the intersection of contemporary European jazz, world music, and rock, drawing inspiration from the expressive, song-oriented drumming of icons like Brian Blade and Elvin Jones. His international reach is further reflected in collaborations with jazz musicians such as AtsukoShimada, YunmiKang, and SangyeongPark. 

Riaan Vosloo

Dr. Riaan Vosloo is course leader for MA PMP. Riaan has extensive experience in multiple musical roles in many varied musical projects. Riaan was a founding member of the band Nostalgia 77, a band he continues to work with. Riaan was also co-founder of the label Impossible Ark records. Riaan graduated from Leeds College of Music (BA) and the Royal Academy of Music (MA). He completed his doctorate at Royal at Birmingham Conservatoire. As well as continuing involvement in the music industry, Riaan is active in a wide range of teaching and research activities, with a specialism in practice research.
