Recently I’ve started to feel a desire to do more mentoring as I love when jazz piano teaching opens up into this territory. I find that this aspect of teaching can be so fascinating as it’s open ended and dyadic and gives me the chance to explore profound questions about life, philosophy and the mysteries of existence. I’m interested in the freedom we have to explore existence in endless depth and also in various new theories which help us to understand the complexities of the modern world and at the same time finding an anchoring in the ancient wisdom of various spiritual traditions. I think there are exciting opportunities to live more creative, autonomous and cooperative lives which go beyond the old understandings which relied on mechanistic and hierarchical structures. To do so takes courage and a willingness to try new ways of doing things but there are rewards to be had when we step out of our comfort zones.
I think one of the first things we have to learn to accept is that these are extraordinary times which are shifting so quickly that it’s easy to be overwhelmed. But if we can let go of the old ways of acting in the world we can realise that actually it’s exciting to be living at a time when we can be shifting from various different activities and roles and work and have an opportunity to experience so many interesting possibilities. Hopefully as a mentor I can suggest theories or spiritual practises which can help to ground us or free us up for what is needed at different times and suggest frameworks which can support us whilst we explore broader possibilities.
