I’m starting a series of four person group jazz piano lessons. The idea is for you to come to the lesson with questions on various jazz piano topics such as scales, repertoire, harmony, voicings, soloing, improvisation, composition or rhythm etc. and for me to respond to those questions as clearly as I can.
I find this to be an enjoyable way to work and sometimes preferable to individual lessons. This is because it allows for people of different levels or just with differing natural aptitudes, to see what others are working on or are curious about. It can help to make it clearer that there isn’t a one size fits all path and that everyone has to discover for themselves what they’re interested in and inspired by in music and what are the areas of growth and development that they would like to focus on.
I find that students in individual lessons are sometimes unfamiliar with working on their own initiative and are hoping that I’ll take them through a curriculum step by step. However, it’s become increasingly clear to me that it’s essential to encourage students to find their own way through the material and to follow their own guidance about what they want to learn. There’s a huge difference between a student who feels that they have a duty to learn something and digest a stream of information compared with a student who has a burning curiosity about a subject and who is desperate to learn more and improve. The latter invariably makes faster progress but increasingly it’s a fascinating process for me to encourage everyone into finding their own path in learning.
