Piano Lessons Bristol: Hal Galper. This is a brilliant video from a really interesting Jazz educator called Hal Galper. In it he talks about the difference between the practise mentality and the playing/performance attitude.
Practise attitude
The practise attitude is goal orientated and is about achieving specific development and set goals. You use your intellect and calculate how to improve specific things parts of your playing i.e. technical facility or learning about specific concepts such as harmony or scales.
Playing attitude
The playing attitude is a process and is about how you play not what you play. It’s about being involved in what you’re playing, enjoying it and playing. So playing is key, i.e. trying things, experimenting, being childlike, curious, having fun, daring, taking risks. Great video!
